JLPT vs NAT: Which Japanese Exam Should You Take?

2 July 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

Short answer: the JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) is the global standard and is held twice a year; the NAT-TEST is a very similar exam held almost every month, useful for extra practice and faster certification. For most learners in India, the JLPT is the main goal, with the NAT-TEST as a helpful stepping-stone in between.

If you are learning Japanese and planning to prove your ability, you will quickly run into two names: the JLPT and the NAT-TEST. They test the same language and use similar level systems, so it is easy to get confused about which one matters. This guide breaks down exactly how they differ and how to use both to your advantage.

What is the JLPT?

The JLPT is the world's most recognised Japanese exam, jointly organised by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES). It has been running since 1984 and is taken by well over a million people worldwide every year.

  • Levels: five levels, from N5 (beginner) up to N1 (near-native).
  • When: held twice a year — in July and December, on the first Sunday of each month.
  • What it tests: vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening. There is no speaking or writing section.
  • Why it matters: employers, universities, scholarship bodies and visa programmes around the world accept the JLPT. It is the certificate most learners aim for because it opens the most doors.

What is the NAT-TEST?

The NAT-TEST (Japanese Language NAT-TEST) measures the same core skills across comparable levels (5 down to 1, matching JLPT N5–N1). Its structure and question style are deliberately close to the JLPT, which is exactly why it is such a useful practice exam.

  • Levels: five levels, roughly equivalent to JLPT N5–N1.
  • When: held almost every month — a huge advantage if you do not want to wait months for a sitting.
  • What it tests: vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening — the same skill areas as the JLPT.
  • Why it matters: it lets you benchmark your progress regularly and get real exam experience before the JLPT.

JLPT vs NAT — a side-by-side comparison

  • How often: JLPT — twice a year (July & December). NAT — roughly every month.
  • Global recognition: JLPT — the worldwide standard; accepted for jobs, higher studies and visas. NAT — recognised and respected, and excellent for practice, but the JLPT carries more weight for official purposes.
  • Levels: both run beginner to advanced (JLPT N5–N1; NAT 5–1).
  • Difficulty: broadly similar at each level, though many learners find the NAT-TEST a gentle, confidence-building way to experience an exam.
  • Results speed: NAT results generally come faster, which suits learners who want quick feedback.
  • Centres near Tamil Nadu: JLPT — Karur, Chennai and Bangalore. NAT — Chennai.

So which one should you take?

Choose based on your goal:

  • For a job in a Japanese company, higher studies, or a work visa — aim for the JLPT. It is the credential recruiters and universities look for.
  • For faster feedback and exam practice — use the NAT-TEST in the months between JLPT sittings to stay sharp and measure your progress.

The smartest strategy is not to choose one and ignore the other — it is to use both. Sit a NAT-TEST or two to build exam confidence, then take the JLPT as your headline certificate.

How we use both at Mozhippattru

At Mozhippattru we prepare students primarily for the JLPT — our current target is JLPT N5 in December 2026, followed by N4 in July 2027 — while using the monthly NAT-TEST as a low-pressure checkpoint along the way. Classes are taught in Tamil, English and Japanese by an N1-certified teacher, online across India and in-class in Pallipalayam, Namakkal.

Common questions

Is the NAT-TEST accepted for jobs and visas? The JLPT is the safer choice for official purposes. Use the NAT-TEST mainly for practice and progress-tracking.

Is NAT easier than JLPT? They are pitched at similar levels. Because the NAT-TEST is monthly and familiar in style, many learners simply find it less stressful.

Can a complete beginner take these? Yes — start at N5, the beginner level, once you have learned the basics. A good course gets you there in a few months.

Cost, scoring and results

Both exams charge a modest registration fee, set for each session — always check the official portal for the current amount. Scoring is by section, and on the JLPT you must meet both an overall pass mark and a minimum in each section, so balanced preparation matters. You receive a certificate for the level you pass, and the NAT-TEST typically returns results faster, which is another reason it works well as a progress check between JLPT sittings.

One more practical point: neither certificate expires. Once you pass a level it is yours for life, so the sensible strategy is to keep climbing the ladder — clear N5, then N4, then N3 — rather than re-taking the same level. Each higher level meaningfully increases your job and study options.
