How to Verify a Japanese Teacher Is Really JLPT N1-Certified

12 August 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

Short answer: to verify a teacher is truly JLPT N1-certified, ask to see their JLPT certificate / result slip for level N1, check the issuing body (Japan Foundation & JEES), and judge them in a free demo — genuine N1 ability shows immediately in fluent, accurate Japanese and confident grammar explanations.

What "N1-certified" actually means

N1 is the highest of the five JLPT levels. Passing it means near-native reading and listening ability. It is awarded by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES), with a certificate and a scored result slip.

How to verify — step by step

  • 1. Ask to see the certificate. A real N1 holder will happily show their JLPT N1 certificate or result slip. Look for the level (N1), the candidate name, and the issuing organisation.
  • 2. Check the issuer. Legitimate certificates come from the Japan Foundation / JEES — not a private "in-house" certificate.
  • 3. Attend a free demo. Real N1 ability is obvious in a live class — natural pronunciation, instant grammar answers, and the ability to explain why a rule works, not just what it is.
  • 4. Ask about experience. Where did they learn, and have they worked with Japanese companies or lived/studied in Japan?

Green flags of a genuine N1 teacher

  • Explains grammar clearly and answers tricky doubts without hesitation.
  • Comfortable switching between Japanese and your language (Tamil/English).
  • Happy to be verified — no defensiveness about the question.
  • Real student results and reviews.

Red flags

  • Refuses or dodges when asked about the certificate.
  • Only a vague "trained in Japanese" claim with no level.
  • No demo class allowed before payment.
