How Long Does It Really Take to Go From N5 to N3 in Japanese?
11 August 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School
Short answer: with consistent study (about 30–60 minutes a day plus classes), most learners go from zero to N5 in 4–6 months, N5 to N4 in another 4–6 months, and N4 to N3 in roughly 6–8 months. In total, expect around 1.5 to 2 years from complete beginner to N3 — faster if you study more intensively.
Level-by-level timeline
- N5 (beginner): ~150 hours of guided learning. Kana, ~100 kanji, ~800 words, basic conversation. About 4–6 months.
- N4 (elementary): more kanji and vocabulary, polite forms, natural daily conversation. Another ~4–6 months.
- N3 (intermediate): the big step up — near-natural comprehension, longer reading, expressing opinions. Around 6–8 months from N4.
What decides your speed
- Consistency — daily practice beats weekend cramming, every time.
- Study hours per week — 1 hour a day vs 3 hours a day changes the timeline a lot.
- Good teaching — a clear, mother-tongue explanation saves months of confusion.
- Kanji habit — steady daily kanji is the difference-maker at N3.
Why N3 is worth the climb
N3 is the practical turning point for jobs — you can handle everyday workplace communication, and many Japanese companies in India short-list from N3 upward. It is the level where Japanese starts to become genuinely useful, not just academic.
How to get there faster (without burnout)
- Set a target exam date for each level and work backward.
- Use mock tests to catch weak areas early.
- Grow speaking and listening alongside reading — don't leave them for later.
- Keep a small daily habit rather than occasional long sessions.
