What JLPT Level Do You Need for a Job in Japan?
15 July 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

Short answer: most entry-level jobs in Japan need around JLPT N4 (or JFT-Basic), professional and office roles usually want N2, and interpreting or client-facing work needs N1. N5 alone is a foundation, not yet a job level.
One of the most common questions learners ask is exactly how much Japanese they need before they can work. The honest answer is that it depends on the job — but there are clear patterns you can plan around.
Level-by-level guide
- N5 (beginner): basic greetings and simple phrases. A foundation only — keep going.
- N4 + JFT-Basic: unlocks many SSW jobs — caregiving, food, hospitality and manufacturing.
- N3: a big jump in options — factory coordination, better SSW roles and some IT support work.
- N2: the sweet spot for office and engineering jobs; most Japanese employers list N2 as a requirement.
- N1 (advanced): interpreting, translation, management and client-facing roles.
Why N4 is the key milestone
N4 is where Japanese starts paying you back. Combined with JFT-Basic and a sector skills test, it is enough to enter Japan through the SSW programme. That is why our first goal for students is a solid N5, quickly followed by N4 — the point where real opportunities open up.
How level maps to salary
Moving up the levels is not just about vocabulary — it changes which tier of jobs you can apply for. An N4 candidate and an N2 candidate are often competing for completely different roles with very different pay. Investing in the next level is one of the highest-return decisions you can make.
Do not stop at N5
N5 proves you have started; it rarely lands a job by itself. The learners who succeed treat N5 as month one, not the finish line, and keep climbing toward N4, N3 and beyond. Consistency matters far more than natural talent.
Frequently asked questions
Is N4 enough to work in Japan? For many SSW jobs, yes — N4 or JFT-Basic plus a skills test. For office and professional roles, aim for N2.
Which level do IT companies want? Usually N2, though N3 can get you started, especially for bridge/coordination roles.
How long to reach N4 from zero? With steady classes, several months is realistic for a motivated learner.
Does JLPT expire? No — once you pass a level it is yours for life, so keep climbing rather than repeating.
