How Much Japanese Do You Need for University Admission in Japan?

6 August 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

Short answer: most Japanese-taught university programmes expect around JLPT N2 (sometimes N1 for top courses), while many English-taught (G30/global) programmes need little or no Japanese for admission. Undergraduate applicants often also take the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission). Even for English-taught courses, N4–N3 Japanese makes daily life and part-time work far easier.

Two routes into a Japanese university

  • Japanese-taught programmes: typically need JLPT N2/N1 and, for undergraduates, the EJU. This is the traditional route and the most affordable.
  • English-taught programmes: designed for international students; admission may need only English proficiency. Great if your Japanese isn't there yet — but learning Japanese still hugely helps life in Japan.

What is the EJU?

The EJU tests Japanese-as-a-foreign-language plus subjects like maths and science, and is used by many universities to assess undergraduate applicants. If you are targeting a Japanese-taught undergraduate course, plan for both the JLPT and the EJU.

Why Japanese helps even for English courses

  • Daily life — rent, banking, transport and shopping run in Japanese.
  • Part-time work — most student jobs need conversational Japanese; N4–N3 opens far more options.
  • Scholarships & internships — many favour students with Japanese ability.
  • Staying on to work — a job in Japan after graduation almost always needs solid Japanese.

A realistic timeline

From absolute beginner, reaching N2 is a serious but achievable multi-year goal: N5 in about 4–6 months, then N4, N3 and N2 each taking a few more months with consistent study. Start early and keep a target exam each step so you are admission-ready when applications open.
