Is JLPT Valid for a Lifetime?

8 July 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

Short answer: yes — the JLPT certificate has no expiry date. Once you pass a level, that certification is valid for life and never needs to be renewed.

This is great news for learners, but there is an important nuance worth understanding, because "valid forever" and "impressive forever" are not quite the same thing.

The certificate never expires

Unlike some English tests (such as IELTS or TOEFL) that expire after two years, the JLPT certificate is permanent. If you pass N3 today, that N3 result is yours for life. There is no renewal fee, no re-test requirement, and no expiry date printed on the certificate.

The nuance employers care about

While the paper never expires, language ability can fade if you stop using it. Some employers or universities, especially for language-critical roles, may ask for a result from the last 1–2 years, or simply test your current ability in an interview. This is not about the certificate expiring — it is about proving your skills are still sharp. So the smart approach is to keep practising even after you pass.

What this means for you

  • You never have to re-take a level just to keep it valid.
  • Aim for the highest level you comfortably can, then maintain it with regular use — reading, listening, conversation.
  • Keep climbing the ladder (N5 → N4 → N3 …). A higher, recent level is more persuasive than an old lower one.
  • If a job specifically wants a recent score, you can re-sit to refresh it — but that is a choice, not a requirement.

Why climbing beats standing still

Because levels build on each other, the best way to keep your Japanese valuable is to keep progressing. Moving from N5 to N4 to N3 not only refreshes your skills but continually strengthens your résumé. A learner who keeps advancing always has a recent, higher certificate to show.

Common questions

Do I need to renew my JLPT? No — there is nothing to renew. It is permanent.

Will an old JLPT certificate still count? Officially yes, forever. Some employers may still check your current level in an interview, so keep practising.

Is it worth re-taking a higher level? Often yes — a higher level opens more doors and keeps your certification current.

Keep progressing

Mozhippattru helps you climb from N5 to N3 (and toward N2/N1), so your Japanese keeps growing rather than fading — and you always have a strong, recent level to show.
