Understanding Japanese Business Culture

24 May 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

Japanese business culture prizes respect, harmony and attention to detail. A little awareness goes a long way.

Hierarchy and respect

Seniority matters. Use polite language (keigo) with superiors and clients, and follow the lead of senior colleagues.

Business cards (meishi)

Exchange cards with both hands, read the card you receive, and treat it respectfully — it represents the person.

Group harmony (wa)

Decisions are often made by consensus. Avoid putting people on the spot; value is placed on team harmony over individual assertiveness.

Punctuality and preparation

Being early is being on time. Thorough preparation and follow-through build trust.

Everyday phrases

お疲れさまです (good work), よろしくお願いします (I look forward to working with you) and 失礼します (excuse me) are workplace staples.

Respect, humility and reliability are the foundations of doing business well in Japan.
