Japanese vs Chinese vs Korean: Which Should You Learn?
29 May 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School
Japanese, Chinese and Korean are distinct languages — not variations of one another. Here''s a quick comparison to help you choose.
Writing
- Japanese mixes kanji with two kana alphabets.
- Chinese uses characters (hanzi) only, no alphabet.
- Korean uses Hangul, a logical alphabet that''s quick to learn.
Pronunciation
Chinese is tonal (meaning changes with pitch), which many find hard. Japanese and Korean are not tonal and have simpler sound systems.
Grammar
Japanese and Korean share a similar verb-final grammar (helpful if you learn one, then the other). Chinese grammar is simpler in structure but tones add difficulty.
How to choose
Pick based on your goals — Japan-focused career and culture (Japanese), the world''s largest market (Chinese), or K-culture and a fast-to-read script (Korean). Motivation matters more than “difficulty”.
Whichever you choose, consistent daily study is what gets you there.
