Japanese Job Interview Tips (Etiquette and Keigo)

8 July 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

Short answer: Japanese interviews reward politeness, punctuality and humility as much as your skills. Using correct keigo (polite language), bowing appropriately, and showing genuine commitment can matter as much as your answers.

Even a technically strong candidate can lose an offer by missing the cultural cues of a Japanese interview. Preparing for the etiquette is just as important as preparing your answers.

Etiquette basics

  • Arrive early — being on time means being 5–10 minutes early.
  • Dress conservatively; a dark suit is the safe default.
  • Greet with a polite bow and wait to be invited to sit.
  • Keep answers respectful and avoid over-selling yourself.
  • Switch off your phone and keep documents neat.

Language matters

Even modest use of keigo shows respect and cultural awareness. You do not need to be perfect, but demonstrating that you have learned the polite forms makes a strong impression and signals you will fit into a Japanese team.

Common questions to prepare

  • Why do you want to work in Japan / for this company?
  • What are your strengths and how will you contribute?
  • How will you handle living and working in a new culture?
  • Tell us about a challenge you overcame.

How to practise

The best preparation is a realistic mock interview — practising your self-introduction (jikoshoukai), answers and etiquette out loud until they feel natural. Confidence comes from repetition, not from reading tips once.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need perfect keigo? No, but showing you have learned and can use the basics matters a lot.

What should I wear? A conservative dark suit is the safe, expected choice.

How early should I arrive? Aim to be ready 5–10 minutes before the scheduled time.

Is it bad to over-sell myself? Yes — humility and teamwork are valued over boastfulness in Japan.
