Can Commerce or Arts Students Learn Japanese?
8 July 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School
Short answer: yes — anyone can learn Japanese, whatever their background. Commerce and arts students often do brilliantly, because language learning rewards consistency and communication skills, not a technical degree.
A common myth is that foreign languages — or Japanese in particular — are only for engineers or "brilliant" students. That is simply not true. Some of the best translators, interpreters and language teachers come from commerce and arts backgrounds.
Why commerce and arts students often excel
Language is about communication, memory and consistency. Arts and commerce students frequently have strong reading, writing and people skills — exactly what languages reward. Japanese pronunciation is simple and its grammar is logical, so you do not need a maths or science mindset. What you need is steady daily practice and a good teacher.
Great career paths for commerce/arts + Japanese
- Translation and interpretation — a top career for language lovers, and among the best-paid language roles.
- Business, trade and import/export — coordinators and liaisons for Japanese companies operating in India.
- Tourism and hospitality — guiding, travel and hospitality roles serving Japanese visitors.
- Teaching — become a Japanese teacher yourself once you reach a strong level.
- BPO/KPO Japan desks — bilingual support, documentation and customer roles.
- Content, media and localisation — subtitling, and adapting content for Japanese or Indian audiences.
You do not need to be "good at maths"
Let go of that myth entirely. Japanese has no maths in it. With a Tamil-medium teacher and a daily habit, arts and commerce students progress just as fast as anyone — often faster, thanks to their language instincts.
How to start from zero
- Learn hiragana and katakana (about two weeks).
- Build basic vocabulary and simple sentences — JLPT N5 level.
- Set a target level and study consistently.
- Practise speaking and listening from day one.
Common questions
I am from a Tamil-medium arts background — can I really do this? Yes. Tamil-medium teaching is designed exactly for you, and Japanese grammar suits Tamil speakers well.
Will employers value Japanese from a non-technical graduate? Yes — translation, business, tourism and teaching roles specifically want strong language skills, not engineering.
