From Zero to JLPT N5 in 4 Months: A Study Plan

27 May 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

JLPT N5 is very achievable in about four months of steady, daily study. Here''s a month-by-month plan.

Month 1: Foundations

Master hiragana and katakana. Learn basic pronunciation, greetings, numbers and your first ~100 words. Start です/ます.

Month 2: Core grammar & vocabulary

Learn the key particles (は, が, を, に, で), basic verbs and the te-form. Build toward 400 words and start the most common kanji.

Month 3: Expand & listen

Finish the N5 vocabulary (~800 words) and kanji (~100). Add daily listening practice with beginner content.

Month 4: Exam readiness

Review weak spots and do timed mock tests to build speed and confidence in each section.

Daily rhythm

Aim for ~60 minutes a day: SRS vocabulary, one grammar point, and a little listening. Consistency is everything.

Follow this plan and you''ll walk into the N5 exam prepared and confident.
