Choose the right shows
Slice-of-life and everyday-setting anime use realistic, useful language. Action and fantasy often use dramatic or archaic speech you won''t need early on.
Watch actively
- Watch once for enjoyment.
- Rewatch a scene with Japanese subtitles.
- Look up a few key words and note them.
- Shadow a line or two out loud.
Mind the speech style
Anime often uses very casual or rough speech (おれ, 〜ぞ, 〜な). Great for listening, but don''t copy it in polite situations.
