JLPT Exam Centres in Tamil Nadu: Where & When to Take It

3 July 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

Quick answer: learners in Tamil Nadu usually sit the JLPT at centres in Karur, Chennai or Bangalore, and the NAT-TEST in Chennai. The JLPT is held twice a year, in July and December, on the first Sunday of each month.

One of the first practical questions every learner in Tamil Nadu asks is: "Where do I actually take the exam, and when?" Here is everything you need — centres, dates, registration and preparation — in one place.

JLPT exam centres near Tamil Nadu

The JLPT is held at a fixed set of centres across India. For learners in Tamil Nadu, the most convenient options are:

  • Karur — the closest option for the Namakkal, Erode, Salem, Tiruppur and Karur belt. If you are in the western/central districts, this usually means the least travel.
  • Chennai — the main Tamil Nadu centre, ideal if you are in or near the capital.
  • Bangalore — a convenient choice for people in the western districts and along the Karnataka border.

The NAT-TEST is available in Chennai and, because it runs almost every month, it is a great way to sit a real exam without waiting for the twice-a-year JLPT.

When is the JLPT held?

The JLPT takes place on the first Sunday of July and the first Sunday of December every year. You choose a single level (N5 to N1) for each sitting. Our current student target is JLPT N5 on 06 December 2026, followed by N4 in July 2027 — a realistic, paced plan for a beginner starting now.

How registration works

Registration opens a few months before each sitting through the official JLPT India portal. The typical steps are:

  • Create an account and fill in your details.
  • Select your level and preferred exam centre.
  • Pay the registration fee online (a modest amount set each session).
  • Download your admit card / test voucher closer to the exam date.

Seats at popular centres can fill up, so register early once the window opens. If you study with us, we walk you through registration so nothing is missed.

What to carry on exam day

  • Your printed admit card / test voucher.
  • A valid photo ID.
  • Pencils/eraser as specified in your voucher.
  • Arrive early — reporting time is usually well before the exam starts.

How to prepare from anywhere in Tamil Nadu

Here is the good news: you only need to travel to sit the exam, not to learn. You can prepare completely from home. Mozhippattru runs online classes across India (with in-class options too), taught in Tamil, English and Japanese by an N1-certified teacher, based in Pallipalayam, Namakkal.

A structured JLPT N5 course is about 150 hours, paced to make you fully exam-ready with mock tests and doubt support along the way. Beginners start from the very first and build up level by level.

Common questions

Can I take the JLPT in my own town? Only at official centres — for Tamil Nadu that usually means Karur, Chennai or Bangalore. Everything else (learning and practice) can be done online.

How early should I register? As soon as the window opens, a few months before the exam, to secure your preferred centre.

Which level should I register for? If you are a beginner, N5. Not sure? A free demo class will tell you exactly where to start.

What each section of the exam tests

The JLPT is divided into timed sections. At N5 and N4 you have a language knowledge (vocabulary) section, a language knowledge (grammar) and reading section, and a listening section. From N3 upward the grouping changes and the reading passages get longer and more real-world. There is no speaking or handwriting section, so your preparation focuses on recognising vocabulary and grammar, reading accurately, and understanding spoken Japanese.

Tips to do well on exam day

  • Sit at least one full mock test under timed conditions before the real thing.
  • Practise listening daily — it is the section learners most often underestimate.
  • Do not leave blanks — there is no negative marking, so answer every question.
  • Reach the centre early and keep your admit card and photo ID ready.

Good coaching builds all of this in — regular mock tests, listening practice and section-by-section strategy — so you walk into the centre knowing exactly what to expect.

Do you have to travel far?

Only on exam day, and only to one of the official centres (Karur, Chennai or Bangalore for most Tamil Nadu learners). All of your learning, practice and mock tests happen online from home, so travel is a once- or twice-a-year event, not a daily commitment.
