Japanese Pronunciation Guide for Beginners

25 May 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

Japanese has a small, regular sound system, so clear pronunciation is very achievable for beginners.

The five vowels

あ (a), い (i), う (u), え (e), お (o) — always pronounced the same way. Master these and most words fall into place.

Even rhythm (mora)

Japanese is mora-timed: each kana gets roughly equal length. This gives Japanese its steady, even rhythm — unlike the stress-timed bounce of English.

Long vowels matter

Vowel length changes meaning: おばさん (aunt) vs おばあさん (grandmother). Hold long vowels for two beats.

Small tricky sounds

  • The Japanese ら-row is between English R and L — a light tap.
  • ふ is a soft “fu” with no strong F.
  • Double consonants (っ) create a short pause: きって (kitte).

Copy native audio closely and record yourself. Your pronunciation will sound natural surprisingly quickly.
