How to Learn Hiragana Fast (A 7-Day Plan)

6 June 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

Hiragana is the foundation of written Japanese. The good news: with the right method you can learn all 46 basic characters in about a week.

Why learn hiragana first

Hiragana lets you read textbook sentences, grammar endings and furigana (the small reading aids above kanji). Skipping it and relying on romaji slows every learner down — so start here.

The 7-day plan

  1. Days 1–2: learn the vowels (あ い う え お) and the K and S rows.
  2. Days 3–4: add the T, N and H rows.
  3. Days 5–6: finish the M, Y, R and W rows plus ん.
  4. Day 7: review everything and add the dakuten (が, ざ, だ, ば) and combos (きゃ, しゅ, ちょ).

Techniques that work

  • Mnemonics — link each shape to a picture (お looks like someone doing a cartwheel).
  • Write by hand — tracing builds memory far faster than reading alone.
  • Spaced repetition — review with flashcards so characters stick long-term.
  • Read simple words daily — apply what you learn immediately.

Stay consistent for one week and you will read hiragana for life. It is the fastest, most satisfying win in your whole Japanese journey.
